On Monday 7 November to an abundant and nervously anticipating audience, the winners of the hospitality’s Golden Plate Awards of 2011 were announced by category. Followed by six months of rigorous judging and analysis across the region by six highly respected and professional Melbourne food reviewers, competition was wide and hotly contested.
The overall winner for 2011 was Queenscliff’s own Vue Grand Hotel. When presenting the overall award to the Vue Grand Hotel, judges said “Attention to detail is the hallmark of this restaurant, the food served here is an explosion of gastronomic delight”. Vue Grand also won Best Restaurant – Fine Dining, Best Chef and Best Cellar of Local Wine.
A strong supportive public voted in the Peoples Choice Awards this year and over 5000 reviews were received. The Winner was Winters Café in Newtown and Highly Commended was Black Bull Tapas Bar.

Winters Café also enjoyed being awarded Winner for the Best Customer Service and Highly Commended Best Café – Licenced.
Black Bull Tapas Bar also received the Highly Commended award in the category of Best Value For Money.
Bellbrae Harvest enjoyed being Winner of the Best Menu Of Local Food, Highly Commended – Best Chef, Best Restaurant – Relaxed Contemporary and Highly Commended – Best Cellar Of Local Wine.
Lavish Café enjoyed Winner of Best Barista as well as Highly Commended – Best Coffee, Highly Commended – Best Café Unlicenced and Winner of Most Improved Venue.
Mr Hyde - Geelong, Fishermans Pier – Geelong, Telegraph Hotel – Geelong West, Maple Tree – Lorne, Pizza Bar – Geelong West, Portarlington Bakehouse, Sandstone Café – Grovedale and Elkhorn Roadhouse all enjoyed awards in various categories for their high quality and standard and overall contribution to our regions wonderful array of food delights and choices.
As former Editor of the Age Good Food Guide; Presiding Judge Rita Erlich stated “The Geelong Region has stamped it’s mark as a food and wine destination and it is a region one can feel proud to be a part of”. Anybody up for a bite? Let’s start at the top of the list and work down..
