A 56-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly being caught on camera stealing from a car on the Surf Coast.

Police say the Pearcedale man is accused of using a surfer’s own car key to rob the vehicle.

It’s alleged he was then seen putting the key back into its hiding spot.

Torquay officers say nearly $2000 worth of gear and money have been stolen from surfers' cars in the last three months.
